Interior Painting for Scarborough Homes

Interior painting in Scarborough is often about undoing the seventies. The bungalows and back-splits around Wexford, Agincourt and Bendale still have their original dark trim, panelled rec rooms and heavy stained doors, and paint changes how the whole house reads faster than anything else.

I handle the prep properly, because that is where these jobs are won or lost. Old finishes get cleaned, deglossed and primed so the new colour actually sticks. I give you a price before I start, and I do the work myself, start to finish.

Scarborough basements are full of 1970s wood panelling and dark stained trim, and both need a stain-blocking primer or the old finish bleeds through as a yellow shadow. If you want the panel grooves gone, they get filled and sanded first, which is real work and I will price it separately. The back-splits around Wexford and Bendale also put stairwell walls at half-level heights, so a lot of the cutting in happens off a ladder standing on a landing.

How It Runs

From Message to Finished Job

1
Walk the rooms

I look at every surface you want painted, check the trim, ceilings and past repairs, note what needs filling or priming, and talk through sheen and colour with you. Photos sent ahead of the visit speed the quote up.

2
Cover and prepare

Furniture moves to the centre and gets sheeted, floors are protected, plates and hardware come off, then holes are filled, joints are caulked and every patch is primed so nothing flashes through the finish.

3
Cut in and roll

Ceilings first, then walls, then trim and doors, two coats on each, keeping a wet edge and rolling back into the cut line so the finish reads the same right across the wall.

4
Reassemble and inspect

Hardware and plates go back on, the room is put together, rubbish leaves with me, and I walk the space with you in daylight so anything that is not right gets touched up before I go.

What Affects the Price in Scarborough

Painting is priced by the surface, not by the name of the room. A bedroom with smooth walls, sound trim and a light colour going over a light colour moves quickly. The same room takes far longer with cracked plaster, a dark colour underneath, tall ceilings, heavy furniture to shift, or oil-based trim that has to be scuffed and primed before it will hold paint. Supplying the paint myself adds material cost with receipts, and you are welcome to supply your own. Either way the price is agreed before I start.

Nothing starts before the price is agreed. Send a photo or two with your request and I can usually quote without a site visit.

Asked in Scarborough

Can the dark panelling and trim in my Scarborough basement be painted light?

Yes, and it changes a rec room more than anything else you can do down there. The panelling gets cleaned, deglossed and given a stain-blocking primer, because old stain and knots will bleed straight through latex otherwise. Grooves can be filled if you want flat walls, or left as they are for a boarded look. Same story with the trim. I will quote both options.
