Your Local Handyman in High Park

I am a handyman working in High Park, and most of the homes I get called to were built long before anyone thought about hanging a flat-screen on a wall. Behind the plaster there is lath, or brick, or nothing where you expect a stud. I find out what I am fixing into before a hole gets drilled.

My name is Sercan and I do the work myself, so the person who prices the job is the person who shows up with the drill. One visit can cover several small things: shelves, a sticking door, a leaking faucet, a light fixture swap. Send a few photos with your quote request and I will usually have pricing back to you within one business day.

Work in High Park is shaped by the age of the housing and by the park itself. Lots back onto ravine land, so decks and fences sit on ground that moves and gates need re-hanging most springs. Inside, plaster walls, painted-over hinges and doors trimmed for a floor that has since been replaced are all normal. Streets are narrow and permit parking is tight, so I load in once and stay put.

What is behind the walls in a High Park house

Plenty of the housing here went up between 1900 and the late 1920s, brick detached homes and semis with wood trim, tall baseboards and plaster over lath. Plaster is not drywall. It cracks in lines rather than dents, it chips out when a screw goes in carelessly, and a magnet stud finder will lie to you because the lath nails are everywhere.

So I probe before I mount. For a heavy television or a floating shelf I want to be into solid framing, or into masonry with the right anchor, not into a hollow pocket that lets go six months later. Those extra ten minutes at the start are the difference between a job that holds and a repair I have to come back for.

Older apartments and the newer buildings near the park

The mid-century apartment blocks along High Park Avenue and Quebec Avenue are mostly concrete and block. That changes the tools and it changes the fixings: hammer drill, masonry bits and sleeve anchors instead of drywall toggles. Balcony doors in those buildings drag after decades of settling, and usually it is the roller or the strike plate at fault rather than the door itself.

Newer condo buildings near Bloor Street West run to their own routine. Most want the service elevator booked ahead and paperwork filed with the property manager before a trade carries anything through the lobby. Tell me what your building asks for when you request the quote and I will say straight away whether I can meet it.

Common calls in this part of the west end

Some weeks it is all shelving. Other weeks it is doors and door hardware. A short list of what gets asked for around here most often:

  • TV mounting on plaster and lath living room walls
  • Hairline crack repair and repainting in older bedrooms
  • Interior doors planed and rehung after seasonal swelling
  • Faucet, shower head and toilet replacements
  • Ceiling fans, dimmers and smart switches swapped for existing ones
  • Flat-pack wardrobes built in narrow third-floor rooms
  • Baseboard and quarter round after vinyl plank flooring
  • Deck boards and fence pickets replaced after winter

How I price and how I work

Quotes are free and carry no obligation. Before anything starts you get either a fixed price for the job or an hourly rate, agreed up front, so there is no surprise at the end. Materials can come from me with the receipts handed over, or you buy your own and I fit what you have chosen.

Anything needing a licensed trade gets said out loud rather than fudged. Replacing a light fixture, a dimmer, a faucet or a toilet is my work. New circuits, panel work, gas lines or moving a drain is not, and I will point you to a licensed electrician or plumber instead of taking the job on.

Dust sheets go down and the offcuts leave with me. Ten years and more than five hundred projects have taught me that people remember a clean floor as clearly as they remember the finished shelf. If something is not right after I go, tell me and I will come back to it.

Good To Know

High Park Handyman Questions

Yes, and it is one of my most common calls here. Plaster over lath will not hold a bracket on its own, so I find the real framing behind it, or I drill and anchor into the brick where the wall is solid masonry. Any test holes get patched and touched up before I leave, and I tidy the cables rather than leaving them hanging.

Send me the building rules along with your quote request. Most places want the elevator booked for a window of time and some paperwork filed with management first. I will read what your property manager requires and tell you honestly whether I can meet it before anything is booked, so nobody wastes a morning being turned away at the desk.

Usually, yes. Solid wood doors in older homes take on moisture in humid months and shrink back once the heating runs. I plane the binding edge just enough, seal the bare wood so it stops soaking up damp, then reset hinges and move the strike plate a few millimetres if the latch is missing. That normally holds through both seasons.

I do deck and step repairs, so long as it is repair rather than a rebuild that needs an engineer. Soft boards, loose stringers, a wobbly railing and posts that have shifted are all fair game. I will look at what is causing it, replace the boards and hardware that have gone, and tell you plainly if the frame underneath is past saving.
