Light Fixture and Ceiling Fan Installation for Oakville Homes

Light fixture installation in Oakville covers two very different kinds of ceiling. South of Lakeshore in Old Oakville and Bronte the houses are old, plastered and often finished with a moulded medallion around the fixture; north in Glen Abbey and River Oaks the ceilings are drywall over standard framing.

I work with both. Chandeliers, lanterns, vanity lights, ceiling fans, dimmers and smart switches, always on the circuit that is already there, and always with a look at how the old one was held up.

The medallions in Old Oakville and Kerr Village houses set the rules. A modern canopy is usually smaller than the plaster rosette it has to sit inside, which leaves a shadow gap, so I either choose a fixture with a wide canopy or fit a spacer that keeps the trim reading properly from below. Older plaster there also means the box is fixed to the side of a joist rather than centred, and a chandelier hanging a few centimetres off the table centre is very noticeable.

How It Runs

From Message to Finished Job

1
Check the box

Before anything comes down I confirm the power is off at the breaker and dead at the terminals, then look at the box itself: how it is fastened, whether a ground is present, and what weight it was built to carry.

2
Fit the support

If a fan or a heavy chandelier is going up, a fan-rated box or a brace bar between the joists goes in first, fed through the existing hole so your ceiling stays intact and no patching is needed afterwards.

3
Wire and hang

Conductors are stripped clean and joined with correctly sized connectors, the ground lead is fixed to the ground screw in the box, and the wiring is folded back so nothing is pinched when the canopy is drawn up tight.

4
Test and tidy

Power back on, the fixture is run through every setting, dimmers get their low-end trim set with your bulbs in place, a fan is tested at all speeds and balanced if it moves, and the packaging leaves with me.

What Affects the Price in Oakville

Height and access drive most of the cost here. A vanity light at chest height is straightforward work. A chandelier over an open stairwell needs staging, careful handling and more time on site. Adding a fan-rated box or a brace bar to a ceiling that never had one takes longer than hanging a fixture where the support is already correct. Quantity helps, since fixtures done in the same visit share a single setup. Fixtures and dimmers can be supplied by you or by me with receipts, and the price is agreed first.

Nothing starts before the price is agreed. Send a photo or two with your request and I can usually quote without a site visit.

Asked in Oakville

There is a plaster medallion around my Oakville dining light. Will a new fixture suit it?

It can, but the canopy size decides it. Most current fixtures come with a small canopy that leaves a ring of bare plaster showing inside the medallion, which looks unfinished. I either pick a fixture with a canopy wide enough to cover it or add a matching plate. Send me a photo with a tape measure across the medallion and I will tell you what will look right.
