Shelf, Mirror and Picture Hanging for Markham Homes

Shelf, mirror and picture hanging in Markham keeps meeting the same wall: the three-storey townhouse stairwell. Cornell and the Highway 7 area are full of them, and that stair wall is often the largest uninterrupted surface in the whole house.

I treat it as one composition rather than a row of separate frames. Layout on paper first, tape on the wall next, drilling only once you have signed it off. Working above a staircase needs proper ladder footing, so nothing leans on the drywall and no tread gets scuffed on the way up.

The rear-lane townhouses in Cornell and the stacked towns near Downtown Markham are narrow and tall, so the usable wall space runs vertically instead of across. Shelving has to stay shallow or it steals from a room barely twelve feet wide, while the stair wall can carry frames across three floors. Older Unionville and Berczy houses are the reverse: wide 1980s and 1990s rooms, drywall over sixteen-inch framing, and enough clear wall for a long run of floating shelves.

How It Runs

From Message to Finished Job

1
Photos and a quote

Send a photo of the wall and of the item, with rough measurements. That usually tells me the wall type and the fixings it needs, so the quote comes back accurate rather than padded. I reply within one business day.

2
Finding what is solid

On the day I scan for studs, confirm them with a small test hole or a magnet, and check whether the wall is drywall, plaster and lath, or board furred off concrete. The anchor choice follows from what I find.

3
Marking the layout

Nothing gets drilled until you have seen the position. I mark heights with a level, hold the piece up against the wall, and adjust until it looks right in the room rather than only correct on the tape measure.

4
Fix, load and tidy

I drill with a vacuum at the bit, set the fixings, then load the shelf or mirror and test it by hand. Dust gets cleaned up, packaging and offcuts leave with me, and you get the wall back clean.

What Affects the Price in Markham

Two things move the price on hanging work: what the wall is made of, and how much leverage the item puts on its fixings. Drilling concrete or block takes longer than drywall and wears out bits. A wide gallery wall needs layout time before a single hole is made. High or awkward positions over a stairwell need extra setup. Removing old anchors and patching what they leave behind adds a little. I agree a fixed price or an hourly rate with you before I start, and hardware can come from me with receipts or from you.

Nothing starts before the price is agreed. Send a photo or two with your request and I can usually quote without a site visit.

Asked in Markham

My Cornell townhouse stairwell rises three floors. Can art be hung that high safely?

Yes, with the right ladder setup. A stairwell needs a levelling base or a proper platform so the feet sit square on the treads, and I will not work off anything improvised over a drop like that. Once the footing is solid, the layout follows the stair angle up through each landing. I usually keep the heaviest and largest pieces low and let the group get lighter as it climbs.
