Shelf, mirror and picture hanging in Ajax is mostly townhouse and semi work. The neighbourhoods built through the 1990s and 2000s north of Rossland Road and off Harwood Avenue are full of narrow-plan homes where the living room has one usable wall and the rest is door, window or stairs.
That makes placement the real job. I measure the free wall, size the mirror or the shelf run to it, and keep the depth down so the room still walks properly. Then it goes up level, solid and where you actually want it.
Ajax rooms tend to be narrow and long, so a wide horizontal grouping suits them far better than a tall stack, and shelving deeper than about twenty-five centimetres starts catching shoulders on the walk through. In the 1990s and 2000s semis the living and dining areas often run together with only a short return of wall between them, which limits where a mirror can sit. Down near Pickering Beach some original wartime-era houses remain, with smaller rooms and framing that does not always land at sixteen inches.
